STANO FILKO
Creating On Paper, Thinking In Space

V roku 2014 získala privátna galéria a zároveň aukčná spoločnosť Art Capital v Bratislave do exkluzívnej správy prakticky celoživotné dielo Stana Filka (1937, Veľká Hradná – 2015, Bratislava). Zachoval sa iba vo forme niekoľkých kresieb a invariantných tlačí, v rámci ktorých Filko svoju víziu „finálnej totálnej inštalácie“ kreoval, plánoval a zaznamenával v konceptuálnej rovine.

Galéria pristúpila k správe diel významného autora citlivo, keď verejný záujem výskumu, dokumentácie a sprístupnenia jeho diela nadradila rýchlym a dostupným trhovým zámerom. Dnes ich hodnotu vidíme najmä v sprístupnení, výskume a dokumentácii inak komplexného a rozsiahleho diela Stana Filka.

Samostatná výstava s názvom Creating On Paper, Thinking In Space je pokračovaním tejto výskumnej, dokumentačnej a prezentačnej série na tému Filko. Väčšina z prezentovaných diel pochádza z obdobia okolo polovice 90. rokov 20. storočia a v rámci Filkovej tvorby zachytáva stret analógovej a digitálnej éry. Trasujú tok a vzájomné prelínanie troch základných dimenzií v umeleckej koncepcii autora, inde zasa spektrum dvanástich farieb (čakier), ktoré v paralelných líniách pretekajú priestorom kresby.

V období polovice 90. rokov, kedy datujeme gro prezentovaných diel, to boli tiež v našom prostredí nové médiá video- a sound-artu, ktoré zapájal. Virtuálny 3D efekt dielam dodávajú najmä perspektíva a geometria, ktoré korelujú so štruktúrou milimetrového papiera. Okrem osobnej mytológie (varianty mena) sú témy a motívy jednotlivých kresieb najčastejšie prepojené s myšlienkou troch dimenzií (5.4.3.D.), a tiež spektra farieb.

STANO FILKO
Creating on Paper, Thinking in Space

In 2014 the Bratislava-based private gallery and auction house Art Capital acquired exclusive rights of administration of the work of Stano Filko. Filko, who was born in 1937 in Veľká Hradná and died in 2015 in Bratislava, had been producing art for practically an entire lifetime. There was an exceptionally extensive convolute of works, which were then still in the artist’s personal possession and were meant to be installed in the form of a total environment in his legend-ary birthplace, the village of Veľká Hradná, not far from Trenčín. However, this artistic design of building and simultaneously living in his own museum (his Argo or ark, as Filko used to call it) proved im-possible to bring to completion. It survived only in the form of a num-ber of drawings and invariant prints, where Filko on the conceptual level created, planned and recorded his vision of “a final total installa-tion”. Today these works on paper are extremely valuable and sought-after collector’s items. They are indeed the sole surviving trace of the artistic purpose, with its utopian complexity, in terms of which Filko’s lifelong work may be framed and at the same time, as from a visual “manual”, reconstructed.

The present Filko exhibition follows on from a series of research and documentary projects which I conducted from 2014 to 2018, in collaboration with Art Capital Gallery. The Gallery took a sensitive approach to the administration of this important artist’s oeuvre, letting his work be researched, documented and made accessible, and thus giving public interest priority over a rapid commercial exploitation. In collaboration with external curators and connoisseurs of Filko’s work, four extensive thematic exhibitions were held during that period. They were presented to the public in the Gallery’s rooms in Bratislava, each one accompanied by a high-quality catalogue. Besides the unique op-portunity to examine and perhaps newly reflect on the artist’s work, a space was emerging here, after a long lapse of time, for his contact with the public. The series of exhibitions gained a positive response from both the professional and lay communities. Today we see their value principally in researching and documenting the work of Stano Filko, which is both complex and extensive, and making it accessible. Equally, however, these very projects afterwards opened the way for the artist’s work to be acquired in high-quality collections at home and abroad. The solo exhibition entitled Creating on Paper, Thinking in Space is a continuation of this re-search, documentary and presentational series on the theme of Filko. From an identical “source” it selects a compact collection of conceptu-al works and the drawings that he characteristically made on millime-tre paper. For the purposes of exhibition, the selection is conceived as an isolated media cycle. Connoisseurs of the artist’s work may perhaps find this an unexpected medium (or untypically small-scale), but on closer examination it powerfully illuminates the conceptual basis of Filko’s thinking about the structure of the world, the dimensions of being, space, time, and also, for example, “virtual” architecture. The works presented derive for the most part from roughly the mid-1990s, and within the span of Filko’s oeuvre they capture the encounter of the analogue and digital eras. As a rule, the abstract geometrical struc-tures which he fashioned on millimetre paper are an imaginary manu-script projection of virtual space. They agitate the flow and the mutual overlapping of the three basic dimensions as creatively conceived by the artist, and elsewhere of the spectrum of twelve colours (chakras), which in parallel lines run through the space of the drawing. In these smaller-scale works the medium of drawing becomes an imaginary gateway to virtual reality, as an infinite abstract structure which the author sees and thinks, somewhere beyond the boundary of ordinary reality. It is as if the virtual (computer-created) image were, paradoxically, executed manually. The themes are abstract ideas of a fictive or visionary reality, conceived in terms of dematerialisation. Horizontal-vertical geometrical lines and structures, and likewise a sys-tem of concentric circles, express the structure of the world, which op-erates and functions latently, as if “in the background” of known reali-ty. This is an expression of Filko’s reality principle, the virtual space of space, a mirroring of a reality that is abstracted. Confirming the artist’s fascination with the new sphere of digital technologies and extended reality, there are numerous textual commentaries on individual draw-ings, which the artist uses to signal contexts for reading them (for ex-ample, “computer”, “virtual”, and so forth). This approach, or the pro-jection of 3D virtual reality in the 2D drawing, is also well exemplified in the E.G.O collection, which visualises a virtual projection of the ob-ject in real perspective. The text as an idea is transformed into a sub-stantial architectural object, which levitates in the space of the draw-ing and signifies a symptomatic transfer “from 3.D. to 4.D. and even 5.D.”

Filko’s monumental and at first sight “disparate” work reveals the energy and desire to be constantly up-to-date. It avows an ambi-tion to contain and apply everything innovative, so as at the same time to confirm the complexity and temporal continuity of the work as a whole. In the Slovak setting of the mid-1990s (which the works here presented date from, in our judgment), this also included the new me-dia of video- and sound-art, assimilated by Filko into his work. In this context, one might understand the drawing and painting on millimetre paper as a certain conceptual variant of the projection of virtual reality. Modestly conceived, introspective, on the one hand this functions as a sketch or “plan project art”; on the other hand, it often has the charac-ter of a complete work in itself. Such also are the full-colour architec-tural structures with the artist’s signature, as we know them from early paintings of his, although here, on paper, they give more the impres-sion of projects for future execution in space. Perspective and geome-try in particular (correlating with the structure of the millimetre paper) lend a virtual 3D effect to the works. Apart from his personal mythol-ogy (variants of his name), the themes and motifs of individual draw-ings are most frequently linked with the idea of three dimensions (5.4.3.D.), and also with the colour spectrum. They belong accordingly on the highest level of Stano Filko’s work, where he was striving for a synthesis of the horizontal-vertical and subjective-objective princi-ples.

For the purposes of this exhibition, we decided also to include a series of monochromatic paintings, once again executed on millimetre paper. Having regard to their wild neo-expressionist language, we as-sign them to the early period of Filko’s 1980s work, when he was still powerfully influenced by neo-expressionism and also by the neo-geo style. In the Gallery space they are installed as a kind of entrée, pre-figuring the artist’s renewed inclination towards conceptual premises during the 90s. Here the harsh monochromatic expression is semanti-cally encumbered by a symbolism of colours (white, blue, red and black), even while swallowing up practically the entire space of the work. Thereby it becomes a space for the individual dimensions and for retrieving their meanings. We have likewise assigned to the exhibi-tion, as a kind of “conceptual bonus”, a collection of prints with rec-orded comments, which again broaden and complement the current ideas about Filko and his conceptual principle of thinking and making art. These paradoxically modest and even inconspicuous media, which were hitherto in the background of our interest both as theorists and as exhibitors, open the way to a deeper understanding of the artist’s work. They disclose a process of engaged thinking by the artist, and above all they confirm the centrality for him of conceptualism. Any-thing that ever “touched upon” Filko’s work suddenly becomes part of it. Apart from the artist’s distinctive principles, which above all ac-centuate the conceptual basis of Filko’s work and thinking (the imagi-nary Filkonian transfer from 2.D. to 3.D. and even further), this pro-ject of exhibition, research and documentation seeks to grasp a further piece of the “jigsaw” of his most developed work and place it in the current discourse. An attempt is made to elucidate his process of thinking, to show why he reaches for the small-scale drawing on pa-per, which is scarcely known to us at all in Filko’s monumental art (full of environments, installations and objects). Needless to say, the re-searcher’s purpose here teams up with the goals of popularisation and education. The exhibition aspires to offer another viewpoint or per-spective for reading the work of Stano Filko, via a certain (modest) mellowness and introspection.
